What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite—the wavy, wrinkled, and dimpled parts of your skin that can normally be seen on your butt, thighs, abdominal area, and hips. What makes our skins look like this and why is cellulite so common in women? All of those questions will be answered in this article along with some tips to help get rid of those unwanted stretch marks.

While there is not one answer to what causes cellulite, there are a couple of different things that can cause you to have it. Recent studies show that the following factors can play into whether someone has cellulite:

What Causes Cellulite

Genetics

Cellulite can run in the family. If you have close family members like parents or siblings that have it, you very well could have it as well. Cellulite has to do with the way fat is distributed under our skin and we inherit ways of distribution from our family members through genetics.

Diet

A diet that is heavy in carbohydrates, fats and not heavy in fibrous foods can cause someone to be more susceptible to cellulite.

Lifestyle

Those who stand or sit in the same position for long periods of time and are not active are usually more prone to cellulite as well. Smokers are also more prone to cellulite.

Weight and Age

No matter your shape or size, cellulite can affect anyone. Although, those who have more excess fatty tissue on their body are more prone to cellulite than someone who does not have as much fatty tissue. Cellulite also becomes more prominent with age. As you grow older, your blood becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. Other factors like hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, constantly wearing tight clothes can also contribute to cellulite.
