Simple Hair Tips To Help You Survive The Summer Heat

Summer is the time for beach days, vacations, parties, and fun. But with the long, hot, and humid summer days we have here in Florida, summer time can also do some serious damage to our hair and add to our discomfort on hot days.

We’ve put together our best tips to help you protect your hair and enjoy all that summer has to offer comfortably without your hair getting in the way. So, get ready to not only survive the summer heat but to thrive with great hair all summer long!

USE SUNSCREEN

We use sunscreen to protect every other part of our body during the summer and our hair is no exception—although you may want to make your own sunscreen from coconut oil, jojoba oil, and aloe or use hair products with sunscreen or UV protection as traditional sunscreen may discolor dyed hair.

HOW TO CONTROL FRIZZ

The humidity and dryness of summer cause us all to struggle with frizzy hair. Putting enough moisture back into your hair to tame it, without putting so much in that it makes it dirty or oily. Proper hair conditioning treatments are important. When styling your hair, it is best to start brushing your hair while it is still damp, use a soft-bristled brush, and use the cold air setting of your blow dryer. There are also many lightweight anti-frizz and leave-in conditioning spray products you can use while styling your hair as well.

For a more long-term solution to smooth out frizzy hair all summer long you can get a professional chemical treatment done like a Keratin Smoothing Treatment which is packed with ingredients keratin, botanical extracts, and vitamins. This type of treatment will give you months of smooth, shiny, and sleek-looking hair!

HOW TO REPAIR DRY HAIR

Dry hair can be a major problem during the summer, as heat is the primary cause of damaging our hair. During the summer, you must protect your hair from your styling tools and the weather! When styling your hair with curling irons or straighteners, make sure you use a heat protectant spray before you begin styling and do not use these tools on the highest heat setting.

If hair is damaged by heat, a good conditioning treatment is the best way to repair it. To repair split ends, you can apply a small amount of conditioner and wrap them in a towel and allow them to soak for 10-15 minutes while you’re in the shower. If there is more serious heat damage to your hair, you can try using a hair mask for 5 minutes 2 to 3 times each week or have a professional deep conditioning treatment done.

HOW TO STOP OILY HAIR

Because the summer heat often causes us to sweat more, it is also a lot easier for our hair to become oily during the summer. The best thing you can do to stop oily hair is to make sure you are washing enough. During the summer, you may need to wash your hair more often and can also try a spray dry shampoo for between washes. Another tip is to not allow your conditioner to go all the way to the root of your hair—you can avoid this by pulling your hair into a ponytail and only applying conditioner to the parts of the hair that fall below the elastic band.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR IN WATER

If you want to take a dip or go for a swim in either the ocean or a pool, there are some steps you should take to protect your hair from chlorine and salt water. You can start by pre-rinsing your hair with cold (tap or bottled) water, which will help keep your hair from absorbing the chlorine and salt. You can use a hair cap to completely cover your hair and provide it with the most protection during your swim. Afterward, you should also use a cotton t-shirt to dry your hair, rather than a towel as this will help you manage frizz and won’t over-dry your hair.
