Reduce Premature Skin Aging With These 10 Easy Steps

Over time, skin loses collagen, moisture, and elasticity; wrinkles form; and it thins out and can become blemished with dark spots. These are just average signs of aging, called “intrinsic aging.” Aging is a natural process and part of life; one we can’t escape. There is, however, another type of aging that we can influence—“extrinsic aging,” or the aging effects caused by environmental factors and lifestyle choices. For example, excessive tanning or time in the sun can dry the skin and smoking can cause wrinkles. These factors help contribute to premature aging signs.

10 Easy Ways To Reduce Premature Skin Aging

Certain activities and lifestyle choices expedite signs of aging. Taking certain steps can help to balance the skin and slow the signs of extrinsic aging.

  1. Wear Sunscreen. One of the most prominent causes of premature aging is the sun, which is why dermatologists, estheticians, and other professionals are always harping about wearing sunscreen every day. Even if you aren’t spending the day at the beach or poolside, protecting your skin is still just as important on a walk outdoors or while driving around town running errands. Any skin exposed to sunlight for more than a few minutes can be affected by the sun’s rays. Sunscreen helps to protect against the damaging effects of UV rays.
  2. Stop Tanning. This holds true whether you are going to a tanning bed or laying out in the sun—you are directly exposing yourself to UV rays, which are well known for their damaging effects to the skin’s cells and accelerating how the skin ages. If you are set on having a golden glow, opt for a self-tanning lotion.
  3. Stop Smoking. Smoking causes wrinkles, discoloration of the skin, and a sallow complexion. Quitting smoking can be easier said than done, but it can have more than just a beneficial impact on your skin.
  4. Facial Expressions. Do you remember ever being told “if you keep making that face, it’ll get stuck like that”? Well, it's partially true. Repetitive facial expressions, such as squinting, frowning, and laughing, cause the muscles to contract and lines to appear on the face. When contracted consistently for years, these lines become permanent. We encourage laughter, but maybe sunglasses (or a prescription) to keep you from squinting all the time.
  5. Healthy, Balanced Diet. Regularly consuming foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates has been suggested to affect signs of aging as well as other health issues. A more balanced diet consisting of fresh vegetables and fruits can aid in a healthier management of your skin care.
  6. Move Your Body. A moderate amount of exercise helps to improve the overall circulation of your body and can boost your immune system. When your body is in top shape to fight against the extrinsic parts of aging, you can maintain a more youthful look.
  7. Reduce Alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, a condition that can lead to premature signs of aging and general damage to skin cells. Minimize how much you drink or be sure to up your water intake to counter alcohol’s dehydrating effects.
  8. Gently Cleansing. Regularly washing your face is important, especially if you wear makeup or sweat a lot during the day; however, your every day washing of your face should be gently. Scrubbing too hard or exfoliating too often can irritate your skin and potentially dehydrate or cause damage.
  9. Moisturize. Using a daily moisturizer can help counter the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic aging.
  10. Use Correct Products. If your skin care products are causing your skin to burn or sting, they aren’t “working.” They may in fact actually be causing more damage by irritating your skin. Be sure to check expiration dates and make sure you aren’t using a stronger product than necessary for your skin type. (Exception: Prescribed skin care products may have a side effect of burning. Discuss this with your dermatologist or prescribing physician).

It is never too late to start making beneficial choices for the health of your skin and your body. These tips are great for starting to make better choices and counter signs of premature aging. Seeking the assistance of a professional esthetician for skin care advice, products, or facial services can also aid in the care of your skin and helping minimize signs of aging beginning to show.
