Keratin Treatments

Keratin is a protein found in your hair that can be damaged when too much heat is applied (like from the use of straighteners, curling irons, or blow dryers), or from the chemicals commonly found in hair dyes. A loss in keratin results in dull and unmanageable tangles of hair. A keratin treatment post-hair coloring or highlighting can help to seal in the pigment from the dye, making your color last longer and appear more vibrant, while working to minimize the damage caused by caustic dyes.
Keratin treatments can also quickly straighten wavy or moderately curly hair (and keep frizz away)—much like being the opposite of a perm. A single treatment can last for months; if you are looking for a more permanent hair straightening option, discuss relaxers with your Brandon Essentials hair stylist.

What to expect During a Keratin Hair Treatment at Brandon Essentials

During your appointment, a hydrolyzed keratin mixture is applied to your hair and then uses the heat of a flat iron to seal it in. This process relaxes your hair's sub-cuticle layer, restructuring it to remove unwanted frizz and curl.

Keratin Maintenance Tips

  • You will need to wait 72 hours after the application of the keratin treatment before you can wash your hair (or get it wet in general), put it into a ponytail, clip it with a bobby pin, or pull it back with any headband or clip. Your hair must remain down and dry for the first 3 days following the treatment.
  • If it does become wet within the 72-hour window, immediately blow dry and run a hot iron through your hair to keep the keratin treatment activated.
  • After the 72-hour waiting period, you should only use a sodium chloride-free shampoo so as not to strip the keratin from your hair.
  • Keratin treatments should be applied after coloring your hair, but before cutting it.
  • You can receive a keratin treatment as often as every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Typically, the effects of a keratin treatment will last up to five months.
