Nothing is more annoying than having well manicure nails chip—which can be an easy thing to do since we use our hands to complete most tasks, some without even realizing it. Maintaining well-kept manicures has become easier with the application of gel nail polish over regular polish and acrylics at nail salons and day spas. On average, gel polish can last 3 to 4 weeks without chipping while regular polish might make it 3 to 5 days. It’s no wonder people choose it to get the most out of their manicure.
With the ever-growing popularity of gel polish, there is an increasing amount of myth and ineffectual advice out there. We’re here to set the record straight.
- Take a break from the gel. We know, you love the long-lasting gel nail polish manicure and plan to continue to use gel nail polish due to its durability. We love it too. However, gel nail polish works like a shell over your nail bed—it prevents chips and peeling of your polish, but it also keeps out moisture. This dehydration of your nail bed is why they appear brittle or damaged when the gel is removed. Taking a break between gel applications, your nails are able to regain some of the natural oil and moisture your body produces.
- Remove it sooner, not later. Gel polish may last you up to four weeks (or more) without a chip, but that doesn’t mean it is a good idea to leave it on that long. Removing the gel polish by week three, can minimize dehydration and damage of your nail bed.
- Don’t remove it yourself. The process may be well described online in numerous nail salon or day spa blogs but that doesn’t mean you should be doing it yourself. A licensed and skilled nail technician is a better resource for gel nail polish removal than a blog article. Often, impatience at home with a DIY gel removal leads to further dehydration or damage to your nails.
- Fight the dehydration. You may have noticed that it has been mentioned that gel nail polish can dehydrate your nail bed. To maintain healthy nails during, after, and between gel nail polish coats, rub cuticle oil into your nails. Not only with this help prevent tears in your cuticles but it also will help to reduce the main adverse effect gel polish can have on your nails.
